A rather interesting way to face life is to always feel useful in what you do for others. Put very succinctly, that comes close to the philosophy of UW.
That’s how I learned to live, with a great example and a valuable inheritance from my parents, teachers, who took extraordinary pride in feeling like public servants in education. I know they had a dual drive: to teach their students the knowledge they needed, but above all, to educate them to be good people.
I began to experience helping others in my youth by attending the initiatives of José María de Llanos, Father Llanos, in the suburbs of Madrid and later at the University Labor Service, which I came to direct in Madrid until it disappeared in the late ’60s.
Aside from my professional activities as an Economist and Insurance Actuary at many companies and organizations, such as CEISA, TREMASA, SEAT, Grupo ZETA, INH and REPSOL, AGBAR, ADESLAS, ERNST & YOUNG, GAS NATURAL FENOSA, always in management positions, I participated in the governing boards of the Colleges of Economists of Catalonia and Madrid, and as Secretary General of the General Council of Colleges of Economists of Spain. I have also participated on the Board of AED, the Spanish Association of Executives.
In the decade that just ended, I had the great satisfaction of contributing to the founding of ICLD, the International Center for Leadership Development, of the CEDE Foundation, and developing the project as Academic Director. Hundreds of senior executives from large multinational companies went through this unique experience.
I was a member of the Editorial Board of Mundo Social and now belong to the Editorial Board of Executive Excellence. I am a member of Intermon Oxfam, GreenPeace and Amnesty International. And I collaborate with several more family-oriented NGOs.
As a good friend used to say, as a life motto, “noise does no good, and good makes no noise.”
Those are my beliefs and experiences.
