PROJECT

We regenerate the rural environment and combat the social exclusion of young people and migrants through training in the operation of agricultural machinery.

We train the new generation of farmers while combating the social exclusion of young people in vulnerable situations, especially migrants, through a one-month tractor operation training course for 9 people.

The course, held in Raimat (Lleida), in addition to increasing participants’ employability opportunities and the cultural integration of migrants, provides qualified human capital to businesses in the area, favoring the development of the rural economy. The project bets on actions with transformative impact, following regenerative economy criteria that create opportunities and build ties among members of a community threatened by an aging population and climate change.

Agricultural machinery training in Raimat has both a social and environmental dimension, as it prevents rural depopulation (keeping young people in the countryside) and supports the maintenance of agricultural and forestry activities that protect pastures and forests, thereby avoiding soil erosion and reducing the risk of desertification.

SYNERGY

This program was made possible thanks to the synergy of two companies, two institutions and three social entities under the coordination of United Way España. United Way’s long relationship with John Deere made the launch of this pilot program possible. Especially notable is the drive of our partner entity, Fundación Comunitaria Raimat Lleida, which connected the different local stakeholders to respond to a problem—the shortage of qualified personnel in agricultural machinery operation—whose solution will have a multiple, transversal impact on the area’s future.

I'm 18 years old. I'm from Gambia. I've been here for a year and nine months. I want to take the tractor course because I'm eager to work.

PROJECT ACTIONS

  • Intensive 72-hour theoretical and practical course on agricultural machinery (tractor) operation, with 240 to 480 hours of practice at local farms.
  • Talks by rural sector volunteer specialists.
