The power of a small gesture

We’re approaching a time of year surrounded by consumerism.

The shelves fill with nougat, ads pop up urging us to get an early start on Christmas shopping, Black Friday has become a whole month of offers and discounts many mark on their calendars. We spend our lives waiting for dates, and we relate many of them to buying: the latest model phone, a better car, that coat that’s no longer “in” from last year.

There are hundreds of dates that encourage us to buy, and why not mark a date that makes us reflect on the power of being generous?

That must have been the thought, seven years ago, of the New York-based NGO 92Y, dedicated to social causes, which together with the United Nations came up with what has now become a growing international day of solidarity.

#GivingTuesday is a global movement that wants to encourage and multiply good deeds around the world. Its goal is to dedicate the first Tuesday after Black Friday, this year December 3rd, to celebrating the act of giving to others: time, money, food… it doesn’t matter what. What matters is finding a good cause to build a better world together.

In these times of great consumerism, how beautiful it is to set aside a day to think about those who have less!

At United Way we join the hundreds of organizations taking part in this special day.

We believe in a world where we all reach our maximum potential thanks to quality education, financial stability and healthy habits. In Spain we have already helped more than 2,100 young people in education projects aimed at addressing school dropout, 1,335 people in health projects, and more than 75 in escaping a vulnerable economic situation by providing them with tools and training to exit unemployment. And we keep making permanent, positive changes through these efforts. But we can’t do it alone.

Projects are funded by companies and people like you who are generous and care about promoting the values we work for at United Way.

If you want to support our cause, we ask you to help us achieve it. Go to our online donation page, and with a small gesture you can exert great power to improve our world.

The power of a small gesture in a great event that we hope will stop being reserved for just one day, and that this feeling of solidarity will accompany us 365 days a year.
