Alexis de Tocqueville, the 19th-century French thinker and politician, highlighted in Democracy in America the power of civic engagement, generosity and people’s ability to come together to build stronger communities. Inspired by this spirit, United Way created the Tocqueville Society in 1984, a community of leaders committed to philanthropy and the common good. Today, it brings together nearly 22,000 members across more than 400 societies, mobilising over $481 million each year to generate positive impact in communities around the world.
Since 30 June 2026, the Tocqueville Society Transforming Spain has been formally established under the leadership and commitment of these individuals, united by a common mission: to strengthen United Way Spain’s capacity to generate positive impact in Spanish society, with the ambition not only to advance social innovation, but also to lead it.
